A community-wide walk through Milton’s neighbourhoods brought residents, families and local leaders together on Saturday, as participants gathered to raise funds for the Milton District Hospital Foundation.
The Milton Family Walkathon — jointly organized by the ICNA Milton Chapter and the Milton Muslim Hub — took place May 9 at Milton Community Park and concluded with a closing ceremony and cheque presentation at the Milton Sport Centre Banquet Hall.
The walkathon continued a growing tradition of community support for local healthcare. The Milton District Hospital Foundation relies on privately raised dollars to purchase essential medical equipment not covered by provincial funding. Last year’s event raised $35,000, and organizers said they were determined to meet or surpass that total again this year.
Although the initiative is rooted in partnerships among several faith‑based organizations, organizers emphasized that the walkathon is open to all residents. Families, youth groups, seniors and newcomers joined the event, reflecting the diversity of Milton’s fast‑growing population.
The walk also drew strong civic participation, with the Mayor of Milton, the local Member of Parliament, Member of Provincial Parliament and regional representatives attending to show their support.
Yousuf Muhammad, Chair of the Family Walkathon and a representative of the Milton Muslim Hub, thanked residents, businesses and community groups for contributing to the cause, noting that the event continues to strengthen community spirit while supporting local healthcare needs.
Muhammad Iqbal, a longtime Milton resident who attended the walk, said the event showcased the town’s unity and generosity.
“It was inspiring to see people from every background walking together for a cause that benefits all of us,” he said. “Events like this remind us what community really means.”
Federal MP Kristina Tesser Derksen also praised the turnout and the volunteers who made the event possible.
“Lots of smiles and family fun at this weekend’s Milton Family Walkathon to raise awareness and financial support for our very own Milton District Hospital Foundation,” she said.
“Thanks to event hosts ICNA Canada and Milton Muslim Hub — with special thanks to the volunteers and organizer Yousuf Muhammad for a great morning of walking for good.”
Organizers say planning for next year’s walkathon will begin in the coming months, with hopes of building on the momentum and expanding community participation even further.
