Downtown Tilbury is getting brighter thanks to a new storefront window‑painting initiative launched by the Tilbury BIA, bringing fresh colour, creativity and community spirit to the heart of the town.
Local artist Talent By Tanya has been commissioned to hand‑paint custom window designs for participating businesses. Her work — cheerful, seasonal and tailored to each storefront — is already transforming the downtown streetscape as painting continues throughout the area.
For Tanya, the project is a meaningful extension of a small business she began nearly a decade ago.“I started Talent By Tanya in 2016 as a part‑time hustle to earn a little extra money,” she said. “Over the years it’s grown into my full‑time business, and I’m so grateful for how far it has come.”
In 2025, Tanya launched her own “Paint the Town” initiative in her hometown of Essex, a project that quickly expanded into neighbouring communities. Tilbury is the latest stop, where she recently completed a week‑long “Spring Paint the Town” effort that brought smiles, colour and conversation to the downtown core.
“Tilbury was wonderful,” Tanya said. “People stopped to chat, take photos, and share how much the artwork brightened their day.”
Her son, Chace, joined her for the week, helping with the large project and adding his own warmth to the experience. “Chace was out with me every day,” Tanya said. “He shook hands with people who stopped by, helped carry items for residents — he even helped a lady load a wood table into her car. Having him there kept the project moving, and together we completed 13 businesses in just one week.”
To encourage participation, the Tilbury BIA offered the first 10 businesses a $100 contribution toward the cost of their professionally painted windows. The response has been enthusiastic, with storefronts embracing the opportunity to refresh their appearance and attract more foot traffic.
BIA Executive Director Gloria Mailloux said the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to supporting both local businesses and local artists. “Investing in our downtown’s appearance while uplifting local talent creates a win‑win for the community,” Mailloux said. “These windows are still being painted, and each one adds more life and vibrancy to Tilbury.”
The BIA hopes the colourful displays will encourage residents and visitors to explore downtown, support local shops and enjoy the creativity showcased throughout the area.
As for Tanya, she says she’s excited to continue growing her work across Southwestern Ontario. “We can’t wait to see what’s next for Talent By Tanya,” she said.
