Centennial Central Public School in Comber Wins Grand Prize for Down Syndrome Awareness

Centennial Central Public School in Comber has been awarded the Grand Prize in the Chasing Hazel Foundation’s World Down Syndrome Day Entire School Celebration, recognizing the school’s strong commitment to inclusion during Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

On April 30, Matt and Hazel Seguin of the Chasing Hazel Foundation visited the school to present a $1,000 grand prize cheque. The award is part of a regional initiative encouraging schools to educate students about Down syndrome, raise awareness and promote advocacy for inclusive school communities.

Throughout March, students at Centennial Central led a series of learning and awareness activities. These included lessons on chromosomes and Down syndrome, myth‑busting discussions, school announcements and participation in the global Rock Your Socks campaign on World Down Syndrome Day.

A standout project was the creation of a Student Voice video, where students shared reflections on inclusion, belonging and the importance of ensuring every member of the school community feels valued.

The visit from the Chasing Hazel Foundation marked a meaningful conclusion to the month‑long focus. Staff say the school is proud of its students for demonstrating leadership, empathy and a strong commitment to inclusion, and grateful for the foundation’s continued support.

A group of Grade 7 and 8 students accepted the cheque on behalf of the school community.
