A local group of scouts recently joined more than 10,000 scouts and leaders from across the UK and over 30 countries in the U.K. for the Poacher International Jamboree—one of the world’s largest youth gatherings. The week-long event at the Lincolnshire Showground brings together 7,000 young people ages 12 to 18, along with 3,000 chaperones and organizers.

Among the enthusiastic attendees is the 35th Tecumseh Scouts group, who made the journey from Canada. “We brought 22 scouts from Tecumseh and have been mingling with many other British scouts,” shared volunteer Darrin Drouillard. “Our hosts have been so accommodating. It’s hard to miss us—we’re the ones all decked out in red and white.”

Drouillard noted the warm welcome and curiosity from British scouts, many of whom asked about the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge. As with jamborees worldwide, badge trading is a highlight for many participants. The 35th Tecumseh Troop designed a special souvenir badge featuring northern lights, a Canada Goose, and the Gordie Howe Bridge—symbols of their Canadian heritage.

Before arriving at the jamboree, the Tecumseh Scouts flew into the UK, taking time to explore London, Calverton, Nottingham, and York before heading to Lincolnshire.

The jamboree opened with a vibrant ceremony, complete with a parade of national flags. Throughout the week, scouts took part in more than 200 activities—from outdoor challenges and competitions to cultural exchanges. Scouts can be spotted trading badges, sharing traditional foods, and taking part in events such as aerial ropes courses, stilt walking, and even trapeze.

“The kids have had a chance to meet and make friendships with scouts from all over the world,” Drouillard said. Organizers describe the atmosphere as “festival-like.”

Held every four years, the Poacher International Jamboree continues to inspire adventure, cultural exchange, and international friendship among young people from around the globe.
