At nearly 85-years of age, Essex’s Roger Langis has dedicated his life to rolling up his sleeves and helping out within the community as he can. He is grateful he is still able to fulfill that sense of community.

The Town of Essex appointed Langis as the Essex’s Ontario Senior of the Year, after being nominated by the community. He was recognized for his years of volunteerism during the Council meeting on July 6.

Annually, the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility hosts this program, giving municipalities the opportunity to recognize an outstanding senior who has enriched the social, cultural, or civic life of their community through volunteerism and service.

Langis, Mayor Sherry Bondy said, continues to give back in countless ways.

He is an active volunteer with the Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum, where he helps maintain the grounds, organize fundraisers, and support community events.

For 15-years, Langis has been a member of the Red Knights International Motorcycle Club that collects toys for local shelters each Christmas, and participates in the annual Ride for Dad.

In addition, he has supported the Heritage Museum, taught fire safety to youth through the Kingsville Sportsmen Association, and remains active in his church community.

Today, his biggest role is caring for his wife at home, Bondy added.

That is “a true reflection of his kindness and dedication,” Bondy said, adding, those who know Langis will say if you need him, he will be there.

Bondy thanked Langis for his “many years of service and for making our community a better place.”

Langis was unsure who nominated him, but was grateful he was thought of for the recognition.

It is a pleasure to be able to help people out, he said.

He noted those who volunteer don’t do it for the recognition; they do it to get a job done. Nonetheless, he appreciated being selected for the award.
