Centennial Central Public School has been named the Grand Prize recipient of the Chasing Hazel Foundation’s World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) Entire School Celebration, recognizing its outstanding commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive school community throughout Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
On April 30, the school community was honoured with a $1,000 grand prize cheque, presented by Matt and Hazel Seguin of the Chasing Hazel Foundation. The prize was awarded as part of an area initiative that encourages schools to educate students about Down Syndrome, raise awareness, and strengthen advocacy for inclusion. Participating schools were entered into the competition to support further education and community engagement.
Throughout March, Centennial Central’s students took the lead in a variety of awareness activities. These included learning about chromosomes and Down syndrome, myth-busting, school announcements, and participation in World Down Syndrome Day through the global “Rock Your Socks” campaign.
A key highlight was the creation of a Student Voice video, in which students shared thoughtful reflections on inclusion and belonging and explained how every member of the school community can help ensure everyone feels valued.
The visit and recognition by the Chasing Hazel Foundation marked a meaningful conclusion to the month-long focus. The school community is incredibly proud of its students for their leadership, empathy, and contributions, and deeply appreciative of the foundation’s support and advocacy.
