Sean Campbell, co-founder and president of Burlington Helping Burlington, said that he has “seen what can happen when people come together to solve problems.”

That’s why he decided to run for Ward 2 councillor in Burlington’s 2026 municipal election.

Campbell said he has become “increasingly concerned about affordability, traffic, and development, and the pressure that those issues are putting on residents.”

Campbell said that he has experience managing budgets “exceeding tens of millions” during his time as an account executive in the advertising industry.

“I believe City Hall needs to find efficiencies to deliver better value for every tax dollar,” Campbell said. “At the same time, Burlington is growing. The growth needs to be matched with infrastructure to support it. Roads, traffic, stormwater, transit, and community services need to keep pace. We can’t simply approve more development and hope for the infrastructure to catch up later.”

Campbell said that he’s “not a politician” and wants to focus on “practical results rather than just politics.” He would like to help build a more vibrant community that grows responsibly.

“We need to do it in a way where we are looking forward 10, 20, 30 years down the road,” Campbell said. “We need to understand what the implications are of the decisions we make today, and how that’s going to affect generations down the road.”

Campbell said that traffic is one of the issues he hears residents bring up most when he’s knocking on doors.

“We need to look at how we are going to fix this when we’re actually increasing density in the downtown core,” Campbell said. “We have to collect more data and analyze that to implement solutions.”

Campbell advocated for “smart traffic lights” and said that AI may need to be used to figure out what keeps traffic flowing.

“Right now, the experiences that I’m hearing from people down on the Lakeshore, it’s just unbearable. These folks are faced with taking 10 minutes to get into their driveway, for crying out loud.”

Campbell said the most recent city budgets are “not sustainable” and said that he would not vote for the next one if it is not properly scrutinized.

“We have to look at every single line in the budget to look for savings,” Campbell said. “We cannot be leaning on the taxpayers’ backs every single year, looking for an increase that’s over the cost of inflation. It’s just not a sustainable method, and that’s what’s been going on for some years now.”

Campbell said that the city may need to cut some services that are perhaps underused by residents.

“We need to expand on services that our residents are experiencing and are enjoying to offset some of the ones that we save costs on,” he said.

Campbell said that procurement, staffing, contracts, and administrative costs all need to be examined.
