The Chatham-Kent Police Service has introduced a new Trespass Authority Agent Program designed to help business and commercial property owners address ongoing issues with trespassing and loitering.

The program allows registered property owners to formally authorize police to act as their agent under Ontario’s Trespass to Property Act. Once enrolled, officers may take enforcement action on behalf of the owner without requiring the owner to be present during an incident.

Police say the registration process is essential because officers cannot automatically act as an agent for private property owners unless authority has been explicitly granted. The program establishes a documented relationship between the property owner and the police service, ensuring enforcement is lawful, consistent and supported by the Act.

Registered properties will display Trespass to Property Act Agent signage indicating that police have pre‑authorized authority to assist with trespass enforcement. The program applies only to properties that have formally enrolled.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service says the initiative is part of its ongoing work with property owners and community partners to support safety and security across the municipality.
