The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says Ward 1 Councillor Lauren Anderson has been named the Ontario Member of the Year by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.

The award recognizes municipal leaders who have shown exceptional commitment to protecting freshwater resources, strengthening regional economic prosperity and advancing collaboration across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region. Anderson was selected by staff and the organization’s Executive Committee for her leadership, advocacy and active participation on behalf of Chatham-Kent and Ontario municipalities.

Since joining council, Anderson has served as Chatham-Kent’s delegate to the Cities Initiative, representing the municipality at regional and international meetings focused on freshwater protection, coastal resilience, infrastructure investment, economic development and cross‑border collaboration.

Through her work, she has helped elevate Chatham-Kent’s voice on issues affecting Great Lakes communities, including water infrastructure, environmental stewardship, shoreline protection and economic opportunities tied to the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence corridor. She has also taken part in binational advocacy efforts and supported initiatives promoting community engagement and environmental action.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this award,” Anderson said. “The Great Lakes are central to the identity, economy and future of communities like Chatham-Kent. It has been a privilege to work alongside municipal leaders who are committed to protecting our freshwater resources while building stronger and more resilient communities.”

Mayor Darrin Canniff said Anderson’s recognition reflects her dedication to the region. “Councillor Anderson has been a passionate advocate for Chatham-Kent and for the protection of one of our region’s most valuable natural resources,” he said. “Her leadership and dedication have earned the respect of municipal leaders from across the Great Lakes region, and we are incredibly proud to see her recognized with this honour.”

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a binational coalition representing more than 425 municipal and Indigenous governments across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region. The organization works to advance environmental sustainability, economic prosperity and freshwater protection.
